This is a horned puffin. These birds have a really interesting annual cycle. They come into shore at mating time (summar months). At that time, their beak turns a bright color and they build nests on the rock cliffs. After they give birth to their young they go out to sea for the whole rest of the year, living out on the open ocean catching fish. Newborns stay out on the ocean for 3-4 years until they reach breeding age. After the mating cycle, their color beaks turn a grayish color, losing all the bright color.
Puffins are a member of the Auk bird family which is very similar to Penguins, except that Auk's can fly.
